The Gilman Paper Company was once the economic heartbeat of St. Marys, Georgia. Founded in the 1930s, it grew into one of the largest privately-owned paper mills in the country. The mill brought jobs, development, and a whole lot of industry to the area — but also controversy, as environmental concerns and political tension followed in later decades. At its peak, the plant was massive, covering over 1,200 acres and dominating the skyline and local economy.
After decades of operation, Gilman eventually sold in the late 1990s, and the mill was shut down soon after. Today, what remains is a mix of history, ruins, and a powerful story about how one company shaped an entire town.
